10:52 pm - Basic Info Meme You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute.Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating HIM/HER? Since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.
Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-Word-Answers seldom help anyone out.
1. First name: Dawn
2. Age: 29
3. Location: Kitchener, ON. Moved to the area for University, and just never left.
4.Occupation: Currently, stay-at-home mom. I will be going back to my day job as a Policy Title Associate CSR for Sun Life in January
5. Partner: Geoff. Going on 7 years now. :)
6. Kids: Nathan, 10 months old.
7. Siblings: One brother, Ryan (26), who is working on a PhD in Physics at U of T. Two sisters-in-law, Donna and Tracy
8.Pets: Cat, Zedd, who is currently competing for attention against the baby.
9. 3 biggest things going on in my life:
A) Baby. A 24-7 time drain.
B) 7-year Kitchen Itch. After cooking more or less the same things week in and week out for the duration of my relationship, I have started to venture out and seek new recipes and conduct new experiments as far as my cooking is concerned
C) Puzzles. Being off work for the better part of a year has caused my brain to turn to mush. Online puzzles are helping me train my brain to be useful for more than funny faces again.
10. Parents: John and Heather
11. Some of my closest friends are: Natasha and Nicole. Don't know what I'd do without these two sometimes. *hugs*

02:55 pm - HEY INTERNETS! I need some advice/help.
I am looking to get back in to shape, since being at home with baby has done NOTHING for my waistline (I've gained about 15 lbs since losing all the weight I gained from my pregnancy.)
Here's the thing: I'm currently doing Aquafit two nights a week. I want to ramp it up with 2 or so days a week at the gym, BUT I'm not willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for a gym membership. Ideally, I'd like to find a pay-per-use facility, where I can pay 5 or 6 bucks to go work out for an hour or two. I've taken a look at a few websites for gyms, but none of them have ANY information about pricing on their sites (this does not surprise me, since I know gyms are NOTORIOUS for the hard sell.)
The YMCA offers a day pass for $8.90, which is a bit out of my price range, but is thus far the ONLY pay-per-use I've found. Good Life has a 3-month Term membership, which I might consider, since after 3 months I'll be back to work, and can investigate the Sun Life Fitness Centre a little better (but it depends on price). I'll consider a gym membership, but only if the price works out to $5/week or less, including all taxes, fees, etc.
Anyone know anything about this stuff?

10:19 pm - Oddly lonely... ... considering my hubby and baby are upstairs. Geoff had surgery on his leg this morning, which has rendered him more or less immobile, so he's hanging out in our guest bedroom with his mini-fridge (sans-beer), TV, and PS2. He just finished watching the Leafs lose to the Habs in overtime... I'm pretty sure he'll be going to sleep soon, so I'm staying downstairs while the dishwasher runs. (The downfall of a portable dishwasher is that someone has to turn the tap off when it's done or it drips all night.)
I am SOOO looking forward to Saturday with phantasm13 with or without her little one, since I'll at least have company. Current Mood: lonely

11:47 pm - 8 Little things combine for the Worst. Day. Ever. Today should have been a good day. The sun was out, it was warm without being brain-melting hot, and there was very little humidity.
My mom came over last night to babysit Nathan, and I was to drive her home today, after which Geoff & I would brave Ikea for some toy shelves for Nathan, then head to the Apple Store for a new car charger for the iPods. Things quickly started to go downhill.
Diaper Woes - When we arrived at my parents' house, and took Nathan out of his car seat, we discovered that he had pooped on the way there, and some of the poop had managed to escape his diaper, ending up on the car seat and his shorts. A quick wash, and everything was fine.
Hi Dad, Bye Dad - My dad had been in Washington, DC all week teaching a transit safety course (Ironically, many of his students had to cancel the course after the first day, since there was a tragic subway accident in DC that killed 9 people.) When he got back last night, he immediately went on call for his safety inspector job. We had hoped to visit with my dad for an hour or so, and had been there for about 10 minutes when his pager went off and he had to rush in to investigate an accident.
Not Again! - We went to Ikea, and as most of you know, that place is a black hole in the space-time continuum. Hours tend to just go missing when you walk in the doors. We walked the store, Nathan in his stroller, decided on the set up we would get for Nathan's toys (I wanted something with shelves so we could put his board books on it, and he could get them out whenever he liked ) and went downstairs to pick it up. When we got to the pick up area, we found that they were SOLD OUT of the item we had decided to purchase. The same thing happened when we initially went to pick up the entertainment centre that is in our living room. We left 3 hours after we went in, having spent nothing, since I was too pissed off to buy the other things we had picked up in the store.
Hungry Baby Won't Eat - After the Apple Store, Geoff & I decided to have dinner at one of the restaurants in the Yorkdale shopping centre. No sooner had we sat down in the restaurant then Nathan decided he was starving and needed to eat RIGHT NOW! I took him out of the restaurant to the Nursing room, where he decided he didn't want to eat. I took him back to the restaurant where he screamed his head off for about 5 minutes before I decided to run to the pharmacy to buy some formula to give him a bottle (he usually gets a bottle to top him up at bedtime.)
More Diaper Woes - After his bottle, Nathan needed a diaper change. Geoff took him to the bathroom, only to discover we had not packed enough diapers for the day, and so did not have any clean diapers with us. Nathan's diaper did not get changed.
Can I Have a Can Opener? - When we got back to the car, we discovered someone in a BIG ASS SUV had parked so close to our car that it was a miracle they got out without damaging our car. So close, that it was physically impossible for me to put Nathan's car seat in from the passenger side. Really made me wish I kept a stack of these in my car.
Turn Right, Turn Right, Turn Right - After leaving the parking lot, and getting on the 401, I decided I would not survive the drive home if I did not get a coffee. I asked Geoff to use his new GPS and find me a Timmy's. I stupidly listened to the GPS as it told me to get off the road the Timmy's was on and go North. Then East. Then South. Then West.
You Drive Like an Asshole - I got back on the 401 at Martin Grove, which is not a nice on-ramp when you're headed West. In order to stay on the 401, you have about 1 km to make it across 3 lanes of traffic before you end up on the 427 South. As I had my turn signal on, I noticed that there was someone in my blind spot, so I patiently waited for the driver to slow down, or move over. He didn't. My options were to change lanes and cause an accident, hit the brakes and cause an accident, or be forced on to the 427. I chose to be forced on to the 427, but not without leaning on my horn and flipping the other driver the bird. Thankfully, we had the GPS, otherwise we would have ended up very lost, since I don't know my way around Etobicoke.
*sigh* At least we made it home without further incidents.

10:45 pm - Elora Gorge Trip We spent this weekend camping with Nicole, Andrew and William in Elora Gorge.
On Friday, I picked up Andrew to go shopping for food and other miscellaneous supplies, then I drove him to pick up their rental car. After a quick dinner, we drove to the campground and set up our tents. Just as we were heading to bed, the rain started. It rained all night, and most of Saturday. I had been so preoccupied with sun protection for Nathan (since you can't use sunscreen on babies younger than 6 months old) that I didn't even think about rain protection. Neither Nathan nor I had any kind of rain jacket, so on we drove to Fergus to pick up rain jackets. The rain finally stopped around 2, and the sun started to come out. We had dinner and headed for the trails. We walked through Hole in the Rock and to one of the scenic lookouts before it got too dark to continue walking the trails. Today, we woke up, celebrated Father's Day, and broke camp.
Nathan was a little champ. I'm very lucky to have such a good natured baby. Nothing seems to bug him, except being tired or hungry.
I had a great time, but for the dampness (my knee is still aching). Next up: Weslemkoon, baby!

09:25 pm - Rib recipe These are the ribs I brought to Max & Jer's games day today. They have been named as at least one person's all-time favorite ribs.
1 or 2 racks of pork back ribs, cut into 3 - 4 rib pieces (do not use side ribs; they turn out really gross.) 1 tsp black pepper (optional) 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 c. ketchup 1/2 c. maple syrup 1/2 c. water 2 tbsp Worchestershire sauce 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1/2 tsp liquid smoke (optional) salt, onion powder, and tabasco to taste
Place ribs in a large pot or slow cooker. Mix together all remaining ingredients. Pour over ribs. Simmer for 2 hours on low heat (stovetop)/ 8 hours on low setting or 4 hours on high setting (slow cooker). Reserve sauce. Skim fat from sauce. Over medium flame on a barbecue, cook ribs for approximately 10 - 15 minutes, turning every 4 -5 minutes. Baste ribs with sauce frequently.

08:12 pm - Motherhood, week 1 I have survived (most) of my first week of motherhood. I say most because, technically, it hasn't been a full week yet.
So far, the mommy paranoia is the most difficult thing to deal with... But I'll get to that.
( The Birth (No truly gory details, I promise) )
( The First Week )
( The Nice Men from the Fire Department )
All in all, I am surviving this thing called motherhood. My boy is beautiful. Now if only he'd sleep at night, and be awake during the day...

"You think it'll work?" "It'd take a miracle"

05:18 pm - Baby stuff Things I've learned: 1) Jealousy starts WAAAY too early. I had my first bout of jealous child this week. I was holding phantasm13's baby, and mine starts kicking. Hard. the baby squirmed a bit, but I just HURT. 2) I miss my feet. Nuff said. 3) If baby don't sleep, nobody sleeps. Random weird dream woke me up last night, and baby decided it was now play time, so of course, I get kicked (Are we noticing a trend?). After about an hour of trying to sleep, I put on a DVD to help knock me out, and accidentally woke Geoff up in the process.

10:30 pm - If you're going to send me a virus, this is not how. ( This is the actual email that just came in. )
1) If you want me to think that you are who you say you are, USE YOUR GODDAMN SPELLCHECK! 2) If you want me to think that you are who you say you are, your grammar should be better than the average American teenager. 3) If you want me to think that you are who you say you are, a Generic "consorcium" name is not going to do it.
How dumb do you really think I am? (And, and yes, I did notice that consortium is SO badly spelled wrong)

11:31 pm - Tired. Welcome to the world, William Kasurak.
My friend phantasm13 had her baby this morning; the first of many babies on the way in the next 9 months... I went over to phantasm13's after work last night, just to hang out a bit, since Geoff was working until 8 PM. When phantasm13 described how she was feeling, I told her I'd be surprised if she made it to sunrise without having her baby. That was at about 6. By 7, I was driving her in to the hospital to meet up with quatch.
I told her that I'd stick around until either she was admitted or they sent her home. Neither really happened, so eventually I changed to I'd stick around until phantasm13's parent's got there. I spent most of the evening keeping phantasm13 company, and doing a lot of walking. We learned that at a steady waddle (Hey, what do you expect when there's two pregnant chicks doing laps?), it takes 8 minutes to do a full lap of the maternity ward at GRH.
phantasm13's parents arrived just before midnight, and Geoff & I came home.
William was born this morning at 8:42. He would have been born earlier, but there were some minor complications, which I won't detail here. My estimate of "by sunrise" wasn't too far off, at any rate.
This morning, girl_theatre arrived by VIA, and Geoff & I went to pick her up at the train station. We spent the morning running around (breakfast, new driver's licence, baby gift, cards...) and when we got back to our house, I promptly crashed on the couch for a few hours before we went to the hospital to visit.
*sigh* I can't wait for mine to come out.

04:01 pm - Thanks, That was fun. We bought our new car today.... We decided to rent a car because it would be easier to go to somewhere like the Guelph Auto Mall to look, especially since we planned to go to about 5 different dealers. We had planned to go to Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Ford, Dodge and, if we still hadn't found anything, GM. We made it to 2.
The rental car place picked us up around 9:30 and we went to Honda to try the Civic and Fit. Liked the Fit, but HATED the sales guy. Pushy as hell, and didn't listen AT ALL! Never did end up test driving the Civic, since we just wanted to leave. As much as I liked the Fit, I would have gone elsewhere to not deal with that guy.
Next, we turned around, so that we were at the far end of the auto mall to work our way back. First one happened to be Nissan, where we wanted to test drive the Versa. We did like the Versa, but the sales guy said that they were having some really good deals on the 2008 Sentras right now, and encouraged us to test drive one. They are VERY NICE CARS! We spent about an hour talking price, etc, left for lunch, then came back and signed all the paperwork.
I pick up my new Candy Apple Red (sweet!) Nissan Sentra on Tuesday.
Now I just need to figure out how to get the full tank of gas that's currently in my Taurus out.
Bonus: They're taking my Taurus as a Trade-in for $300. I was expecting about half that from the wreckers, so no complaints.

05:22 pm - Better than I could have hoped for. BBER(my car) has a Do Not Recussitate. The brakes were making some funny noises on the way home from Sudbury last weekend, and the mechanic wants $700 to fix it. That's on top of the $250 quote to fix the ABS. And we've already spent about $2000 in the last year keeping it running. It is SOOO done.
So we called my parents to borrow some money to buy a new-to-us-but-still-2-to-4-year-old-car. My parents said no, and instead said that they'd help us with the lease payments on a brand NEW-from-the-factory car. WTF? They also suggested we look at buying my uncle's 10 year old Corolla...
We've since said no to the 1999 Corolla, since the payments would be comparable to and the insurance only $20 a month less than a new (2008) Kia Rio. I'll gladly pay the difference for a car that's under warranty for the next 5 years. We're just waiting to hear back from friends and family about the discounts we could get on the 2008 Honda Civic and 2009 (because there are no more 2008's) Corolla. I should know what car I'm buying in the next 2 weeks or so....
Still... Holy Shit, I'm buying a new car!

09:54 pm - Getting ready After Geoff getting help moving his Man Room from quatch yesterday, while phantasm13 and I chilled out in the air conditioning, Geoff spent pretty much all of today painting upstairs. The horrid green in the upstairs hall is gone (YAY!) and has been replaced with a nice soft grey. The baby's room has now had one coat of a soft butter yellow, and is getting very full of baby stuff.
The bad news: Poor Zedd has been locked in the guest room since noon. He's been getting frequent treats from me, at least...
Pictures later.
